Weimar Republic- Rise of Fascism
The Weimar Republic first was a result of the people of Germany being unhappy with their government. At the end of World War I, Germany's monarchy was beginning to crumble, and many citizens saw this as the perfect opportunity to change their life for the better. Previously, they had lived with a monarchy, so they didn't have much rights or say in the way they were governed which resulted in them wanting a new type of government. In 1919, a constitution was written by the people who wanted to get rid of the monarchy and this marked the beginning of the Weimar Republic. This new constitution called for Germany to be split into 19 states. Every citizen was also given the right to vote and they now had a President, a cabinet and Chancellors.
Although the Weimar Republic seems like it should have been successful, it was struck with many challenges and ended up in failure. Inflation increased drastically in the 1920's, and at one point, 6 million people were without jobs. This made the people very angry, and there were many extremists that strongly opposed this new government, such as the fascists. The fascists did not believe in the rights of the individual, but instead the nation as a whole, and they also favored a dictatorship. The fascists were against the Weimar Republic from the beginning, because they believed it wouldn't be very effective, and the inflation and unemployment rates just made them angrier.
One fascist, named Adolf Hitler, took advantage of the unhappiness in the citizens, and was elected as the new dictator. He promised to fix many of the problems in Germany, such as the inflation and unemployment issues. A lot of the citizens were desperate for even a little change from the poor life they lived at the time, so they were very quick to allow Hitler to become the new dictator. Hitler becoming a dictator was also the spark for the beginning of the second world war, which led to many conflicts and deaths around the world.
