May Fourth Movement
After WWI the Chinese were under the impression that all their land that was
claimed by Germany would be returned to them at the end of the war. However,
much to their misfortune, warlords had made a deal with Japan returning the
land to them in return for financial support. As to be expected the Chinese
were not pleased with this decision leading to the revolutionary movement
referred to as the May Fourth Movement.
Over 5,000 students gathered in protest so their complaints could be heard. The students complained on how the modernization promised upon the nation had not been satisfied and how frustrated they had all become with the Chinese traditions. The Chinese government responded to this protest in many ways. They made the Chinese culture accessible to more people, emancipated women, and put a halt to foot binding. However this event did lead to a great interest in Marxism which later led to a communist society.
