Mao Zedong
Mao Zedong was born in December 1893 to a peasant family in central China. After training as a teacher he began to work at a library where he was exposed to great amounts of Marxist literature.Being exposed to Marxist ideas led
Zedong to create the Chinese Communist Party or the CCP. This party allied with the Kuomintang (KMT) nationalists to defeat warlords who controlled parts of northern China. However after their victory, the KMT leader began putting out anti communist movements forcing the CCP to take refuge in southern China. After they had been surrounded by the KMT, Zedong led his party on the famous "Long March" which was a 6,000 mile trip to the northwest area of China, so they could set up a new base for the CCP.
When war broke out with Japan the two parties again allied, but shortly after the war, a civil war war broke out between the two parties. This time, however, the communists were victorious leaving the leader of the KMT to flea to Tiwan. Zedong created a new party to show his victory and called it the People's Republic of China or the PRC for short.
His goal of his new party was to drastically change the Chinese society. He had industry be controlled by the state, and changed the farms into collectives. Anyone who opposed any of his ideas was ruthlessly eliminated. One of his unintentionally destructive movements was the "Great Leap Forward". This movement aimed to make extreme advancements in labour to improve the industrial and agricultural industries. Instead it led to lesser productions, and coupled with the poor harvest, many people died of famine. This lowered Zedongs popularity with the people.Another movement that ended in failure for Mao Zedong was the "Cultural Revolution" of 1966. This was Zedongs attempt of lifting the revolutionary spirit by ridding the country of any impure beings. Instead of inspiring people, it only led to over one and a half million deaths and the destruction of the Chinese culture.
With the remaining Chinese people up in arms, Zedong sent the army in to quell them down. All had seemed to work out until his health had taken him in September of 1976.
